After two and a half years at Monterey Peninsula College and two and a half years at CSU Monterey Bay, that money has all been spent. But Dicks, a 25-year-old psychology major from Salinas, is still six units short of a degree. She and her grandmother hadn’t anticipated it would take so long to get through college. Thousands of students across 23 CSU campuses are finding it will take them more than the traditional four years to complete a bachelor’s degree. The share of wealth owned by those families rose from 7 percent in 1979 to 22 percent in 2012. The bottom 90 percent of households held around 35 percent of all wealth in the 1980s, but held just 23 percent in 2012. New reporting shows that the trend is continuing and 2019 was no better. In 2019, the 500 richest people saw their wealth rise 25 percent. Collectively those 500 people added $1.2 trillion to their already massive net worth, now at $5.9 trillion. David Hay is accused of soliciting a minor for sex, CBSN New York’s Hazel Sanchez reported. Hay worked with the Department of Education for nearly four years before his arrest. On Sunday, police arrested Hay, 39, at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, charging him with using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime. It’s alleged he went online and communicated with someone he knew was under the age of 16, with the intent of having sexual contact or sexual intercourse with that individual. The DOE called the allegations “…incredibly disturbing and absolutely unacceptable,” adding it “…took immediate action removing Mr. Hay from payroll and are terminating him.” According to Hay’s LinkedIn account, he began working for the DOE back in 2016, first as special assistant to then-Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina. The Department of Education isn’t slowing down after recently receiving an “A+” score on its biannual IT scorecard — one of the first agencies to ever do so, along with the General Services Administration. But the good tidings on the report card don’t mean that Education is slowing down. The department plans to consolidate some of its cloud infrastructure and secure its endpoint devices in 2020, Department of Education CIO Jason Gray told Federal Times. In June 2019, the department finalized a five-year IT infrastructure roadmap, laying out how the department would approach IT modernization. The department moved off a 12-year-old legacy IT contract in June, freeing itself up to move forward. “One of the top priorities is going to be stabilizing that and looking for ways to continue our modernization journey along that road map,” Gray said. Iowa’s ability to economically thrive in the future hangs on its residents’ digital skills, some say, and state leaders recognizing that have crafted laws and standards urging computer science education — with the Board of Regents now getting behind the push. The board recently voted to add a computer science category to a list of high school subjects in-state students can take to qualify for assured admission to one of Iowa’s public universities — the University of Iowa, Iowa State University or the University of Northern Iowa. Other subjects already on the list — according to the Regent Admission Index — are English, math, science, social studies and world language. The vote adds computer science to the list.
