The Full Suburban: Online school is an education for parents, too - The Spokesman-Review

Image
Well, this past couple of weeks have certainly been an education. As expected, online school is a whole other ball of wax than the real deal. Unlike our crash course in the spring, teachers, parents and students are much better equipped to handle virtual learning this time around. There’s a daily schedule, an actual grading system in place and opportunities for students to learn in real time with their teachers and classmates sitting right in front of them on a computer screen. But still – it’s just not the same. Consider the essay my second-grader wrote during Language Arts one day last week: “I do not like online school as much as school school. It is just bad sitting in a chair for six hours, sooooo boring. Sometimes I wonder if I will live to see another day. Crazy huh. But that is how bad it is!!! Horibl.” Keep in mind that this is the same child who once told me he “isn’t into happiness,” so take his words with a grain of salt. It can’t be that horibl, can it? I’ve been most

Sununu's response to Manchester's ask for additional school funding angers senators - The Union Leader

Image
MANCHESTER -- A letter sent by Gov. Chris Sununu to Manchester officials in response to a request for additional funds for local schools has drawn sharp criticism from Queen City senators. Back on Sept. 1, the Manchester school board sent a letter to Gov. Sununu and state Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut asking both to work with the state’s federal delegation “to provide adequate education funding to the families and students of the Manchester School District.” “These needs cannot be realistically met by local property taxpayers alone,” the letter states. “Manchester schools need funding to address the deficiencies in education that existed prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and have been highlighted and exacerbated by it. Despite the best efforts of our administration and educators we acknowledge that there will be a long-term effect on our students from the current crisis. These negative effects will be educational, social, emotional, health and welfare related

Department of Education investigating Princeton after school acknowledges systemic racism - NBC News

Image
Federal authorities launched a sweeping probe of Princeton University after the Ivy League school acknowledged the role systemic racism has played on its campus, the school said Thursday. The 274-year-old university published a letter from Department of Education Assistant Secretary Robert King saying that Princeton could be asked to return federal funds it has received — totaling $75 million since 2013 — when university President Christopher L. Eisgruber took office. King focused on a Sept. 2 statement by Eisgruber announcing efforts Princeton would take to combat systemic racism. "Based on its admitted racism, the U.S. Department of Education is concerned Princeton’s nondiscrimination and equal opportunity assurances in its Program Participation Agreements from at least 2013 to the present may have been false," King wrote. "The Department is further concerned Princeton perhaps knew, or should have known, these assurances were false at the time they were made."

Senators indulge in crude language in tumultuous session - The Express Tribune

Image
PHOTO: FILE ISLAMABAD: The Senate session on Friday witnesses the return of harsh language used by the members of the opposition and the treasury against each other. During the session, chaired by Chairman Sadiq Sanjarani, Senator Ateeq Sheikh of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Senator Mushahidullah Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) traded salvos of personal attacks, which at times escalated to calling names. The two lawmakers continued attacking each other, despite intervention from the chair, who expunged all the crude remarks. Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, also of the MQM-P, termed the commotion disrespectful to the house and said that political criticism should result in personal attacks. Opposition Leader Raja Zafarul Haq opined that the house rules were not being followed. However, Prime Minister Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan said that the no discussion could take place in such circumstances. “The environment in the house s
