SIOUX CITY -- Looking to fill the local need for well-trained teachers, the Sioux City institutions of Briar Cliff University and Western Iowa Tech Community College have signed an agreement to spur such training. In a Wednesday afternoon event, college officials announced an articulation agreement, allowing students with an associate of arts at WITCC to conveniently pursue a bachelor of arts in elementary education at Briar Cliff. Among the officials who spoke at the event, some of whom participated via video conferencing due to novel coronavirus precautions, were BCU President Rachelle Karstens and WITCC President Terry Murrell. They said the demand for qualified, exceptional teachers continues to be great. The agreement enables WITCC students to seamlessly transfer credits to BCU. The S.C. Department of Education has purchased digital learning resources from Charlotte-based digital textbook and education resources company Discovery Education to support teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The department purchased four Learning Management Systems, a Learning Object Repository and a suite of digital learning resources, according to a news release. Funding for the programs, totaling more than $15.3 million during a three-year period, is being provided through federal pandemic relief. “The purchase of these three platforms and the seamless ability for every South Carolina teacher to access them and incorporate high quality content into their classroom instruction can be a game changer for our state,” S.C. UW–Madison’s Xueli Wang is receiving a significant award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) for her groundbreaking work examining ways to improve the higher education landscape in an effort to help college students find their path to a better life. Her research emphasizes issues of equity in the transfer process among students who start out at two-year colleges with an eye on transferring to a four-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree, particularly in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) field.
