If we desire to be a godly father or parent – let us observe and learn from one that God indentifies to be a godly father, and Abraham was such a father! Abraham was a father that pleased the Lord, because he would command his children and his household to follow him, as he followed the Lord (Genesis 18:19). Notice Abraham was not a godly father because he was his children's best friend. It was not because Abraham made good money so his children had the latest fashion of shoes and clothes. It was not because Abraham bought them the latest forms of entertainment. It was not because Abraham saw to it that his children received the best education, or pressed them to excel in sports, and he surely did not allow the Egyptians to educate his children or his household. We could go on and on with this, and you may say that times have changed – and they may have – but God has not changed, nor has He changed His principles, and it is still God that we must please – not our children, regardless of how the world goes! Just in case someone has a different opinion on how to raise children, the Lord Himself makes it very unequivocally plain – they must be commanded to keep the way of the Lord, or commanded to do the will of God!
