Carly Edwards about Work and Grad School – Social Studies Education at UNC Pembroke by UNC Pembroke

Carly Edwards about Work and Grad School – Social Studies Education at UNC Pembroke by UNC Pembroke https://ift.tt/2xAlcY2 When I started working, right after I graduated [undergrad], I happened to also get into the [Social Studies Education] program, like, simultaneously. So at the beginning of one week, I got my job then, at the end of the week, I had got accepted into the program. And I had to make that decision, am I going to do both? And at first I was kind of nervous. I was like, oh my God, it's going to be all this extra work on top of the work I'm doing, and I had never been a teacher before. So, walking into the classroom and knowing that I had started the program, making that decision to start, helped me develop into the teacher I am today. Because all of the techniques and stuff they were teaching us in class I was able to actually use. And, especially being a new teacher and not really knowing exactly what to do, having the professors there behind you, kind of w

Dianne Monson, University of Minnesota education professor and writing mentor, dies at 85 - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Image
During her 30-year career in education, Dianne Monson mentored young writers and future teachers while advocating for children’s literature. All of those attributes were on display in 1997. Early that year, the Anoka-Hennepin School District was asked to ban “Goosebumps,” a children’s horror book series written by R.L. Stine, from the school district’s library bookshelves. The debate caught the attention of local and national news outlets. Monson, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota, had long stressed that time spent reading for pleasure was related to gains in reading ability. In response to the Goosebumps controversy, Monson told the Star Tribune that her advice to parents would be: “Is this material any more frightening or lurid than what children are watching on TV? And do they monitor what they’re watching on TV as much as what they’re reading?” Ultimately, the Anoka-Hennepin school board rejected the request that the bo

Tectonic shifts in society and business occur when unexpected events force widespread experimentation around a new idea. During World War II, for instance, when American men went off to war, women proved that they could do “men’s” work — and do it well. Women never looked back after that. Similarly, the Y2K problem demanded the extensive use of Indian software engineers, leading to the tripling of employment-based visas granted by the U.S. Fixing that bug enabled Indian engineers to establish their credentials, and catapulted them as world leaders in addressing technology problems. Alphabet, Microsoft, IBM, and Adobe are all headed by India-born engineers today. Right now, the Coronavirus pandemic is forcing global experimentation with remote teaching. There are many indicators that this crisis is going to

Innovate WithIN: Region 8 – The Bounce Back by Digital Corps

Innovate WithIN: Region 8 – The Bounce Back by Digital Corps https://ift.tt/3aA2MVV The Bounce Back aims to solve the problem of stimming, more specifically, rocking. The Bounce Back is a padded and spring-loaded wedge that fits between the user and the chair. This absorbs the force on both the user and the chair. In Indiana, approximately 15% of students are in special education. Allowing and encouraging students to stim will provide a more beneficial learning environment. The total expense cost is $18.07, and it takes approximately 45 minutes to make. The Bounce Back will be listed at $59.99, creating a gross profit of $41.92. The marketing of this product is towards people with ASD and people who need a solution to calm their hyperactivity. Fort Wayne Community Schools has an extensive functional skills program that would greatly benefit from incorporating the Bounce Back into classrooms. Uploaded 2020-04-01T00:05:28.000Z
